Planned 2020 Rathmichael Weekend:  New Ross

Date: 17th, 18th and 19th April 2020  (Note that this away weekend has now been cancelled)

For our 2020 away weekend, we will visit New Ross, Co.Wexford.

To book your place you must arrange your own accommodation. It is important to then send an email to the Rathmichael organiser (Outings@RathmichaelHistoricalSociety.ie) confirming that you have booked accommodation and the dinner at the reduced rate.

Programme

Friday, 17th April:

7pm – 8.30pm: Introductory talk by Linda Doran in the Dunbrody Visitors’ Centre.

(Note that dinner on Friday is not included in the official programme. If you want to eat in the Dunbrody Restaurant before the lecture, last orders will be taken before 5.30pm).

Saturday, 18th April:

11.00am: Walking tour of New Ross led by Myles Courteney. Meet at the Maiden Gate, where there is paid parking. The walk will end in the Council Chamber of the Tholsel, where we will see the 14th and 17th century maces.

1.00pm – 2.00pm: Lunch at Captain’s Table in the Dunbrody Visitors’ Centre (not included in the cost).

Menu Choices: Soup with home-made brown bread  €5.50

Fisherman’s chowder with home-made brown bread  €8.95

Sandwiches €5.50

Choice of mains from €11

2.30pm – 4.00pmGuided visit to St.Mullins with Joe Moylan. Joe will try to have the Heritage Centre opened for us. Charge €2 per person.

4.30pm – 5.30pm: Guided visit to St. Mary’s Church of Ireland with Jenny MacMurragh.

(Note: If you do not wish to participate in the above two events, feel free to visit the Dunbrody Famine Ship (special rate €8) and/or the Ross Tapestry (special rate €5) instead but do let us know in advance).

8.00pm: Dinner in the hotel (€25 extra, if booked through the Rathmichael organiser. Otherwise €31).

Sunday, 19th April:

11.00am: Depart hotel in own cars for visit to Hook Lighthouse with a short stop at Templetown Church (associated with the Templars) at 11.30am.

12.00: Guided visit to Hook Lighthouse. Group rate for 20 or more is €8 per person.

1.00pm – 2.00pm: Lunch in the Hook Restaurant.

Menu Choices: Scone and tea/coffee €5.50 (gluten-free available)

Soup €4.50

Chowder €6.95

Mains €11 – €13

2.30pm: Guided  visit to Tintern Abbey. (Group rate €4 per person).

(Note that, after the Tintern Abbey visit, if members wish to visit the adjacent Colclough Walled Garden (privately-owned, but originally part of the Abbey), they should purchase a combined ticket (€6), only available at the Abbey reception, not available at the garden.)

A visit to both will take up to about 4pm. Thereafter, if members wish, they could drive to Dunbrody Abbey before it closes at 5.30pm. Admission €4.

Booking Details

We will be staying at the Brandon House Hotel, New Ross (Tel. 051-421703).

The agreed rates are:

two nights B&B @ €115 per person sharing for a twin or double room

and

two nights B&B @ €175 per person single occupancy. (Note that the single rooms are now fully booked. If you require a single room, we suggest that you contact one of the alternative accommodations listed below).

The dinner on Saturday evening will cost €25 (normally €31) if booked at the same time as the B&B booking.

Action Now

  1. Call the hotel at 051-421703 and book the accommodation. If staying for dinner on Saturday evening, book the dinner at the same time.
  2. Inform the organiser, Adrienne Hume, at Outings@RathmichaelHistoricalSociety.ie about your booking.
  3. If you are not staying at the hotel (see options below) and wish to attend the Saturday dinner with the main party, you must inform Adrienne who will make the dinner booking for you at the reduced rate.

If you do not wish to stay in the four-star Brandon House Hotel and Leisure Centre, the following options are available:

Summer Outings 2020

Planned Summer Outings for 2020 (Subject to review)

3rd May: Walking tour of medieval Dublin, led by Howard Clarke. Meet at 11am at the south side (garden side) of Christ Church Cathedral. The tour finishes at 2pm at the Brazen Head bar. As the tour is limited to twelve people, booking is essential at Outings@RathmichaelHistoricalSociety.ie. Please leave your name and contact phone number. The fee is €10 per person. Now cancelled.

10th May: Same as for 3rd May. Repeat bookings not possible. Now cancelled.

13th June: Full day field trip to Blessington and environs, led by Séamus Ó Maitiú. Visit Blessington itself, tower houses, churches, houses, a motte…….Option of lunch in Russborough House in the middle of the tour (this must be pre-booked). The tour starts at 11am and finishes at about 5pm. Meet at the monument in Blessington at 11am. As we will be driving around different parts of West Wicklow, we will be using a car-pooling arrangement for maximum efficiency. The fee is €5 per person. Book at Outings@RathmichaelHistoricalSociety.ie, leave your name and contact number and state whether or not you wish to book for your lunch in Russborough House. Now cancelled.
