The Rathmichael Historical Society was founded in Shankill, Co. Dublin in 1972.
Membership of the society is open to anyone who has an interest in history or archaeology.
The society organises monthly talks on the first Wednesday of every month from October to April. The January talk is combined with the Society’s Annual General Meeting.
During the summer months outings are organised to places of archaeological or historical interest. In addition, an annual away weekend is organised in the Spring to a place of archaeological or historical interest in Ireland.
A week-long series of evening lectures is held annually in the month of August, with contributions from leading archaeologists and historians on the latest developments in their respective fields of interest.
The society is a member of the Federation of Local History Societies which means that Rathmichael members are entitled to participate in the Federation’s activities, including very interesting trips in Ireland and abroad.
In our early days, and under the supervision of experienced, professional, accredited archaeologists, the society had an annual dig. We were in Ballyman, Drimnagh Castle and Dundrum Castle, and that final dig was featured on RTÉ news.
